Kidder Scholarship
H.E. “Doc” Kidder Memorial Trust Scholarship
History
Dr. H.E. Kidder, Professor Emeritus of Animal Sciences, had a distinguished career at West Virginia University, beginning in 1954 and ending with his retirement in 1988. He was recognized for his excellence in teaching, his dedication to students, and his service to the livestock industry of West Virginia.
Upon his death in 1989, Dr. Kidder’s will created a trust fund to provide scholarships to selected students of the Davis College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Consumer Sciences at West Virginia University, to aid them in their continued education in graduate or professional school.
Selection Criteria
Applicants must be pursuing a major in the Division of Animal and Nutritional Sciences in the Davis College and have achieved junior or senior status. Applicants must provide proof of acceptance into a graduate or professional school program prior to final selection.
The successful applicant’s cumulative GPA must be higher than 3.0. Selection is based on academic performance with added consideration for leadership and financial need. The selection committee, like the Division, College, and University, does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, age, handicap, veteran status, religion, sexual orientation, color, or national origin. However, applicants may not be members of the selection committee or in the immediate families of the selection committee members.
To maintain the scholarship, the recipient must be a full-time student successfully pursuing his or her education by attending either a professional or graduate school program. Applicants pursuing professional or graduate school program in a field not offered by West Virginia University, or applicants pursuing career objectives the committee finds would be best served at another institution of higher learning, shall be entitled to attend another, better suited institution.
Support Level
Scholarships cover tuition and fees up to $10,000 annually. This amount will be adjusted in accordance with other scholarship support. Scholarships are awarded for a continuous period of up to 10 semesters, subject to annual review by the selection committee including at minimum a statement of enrollment for the applicant from the institution in question. The number of scholarships awarded annually will be subject to available funds and anticipated continued obligations to prior recipients.
Selection Committee
The committee consists of the scholarship committee from the Division of Animal and Nutritional Sciences, the fund’s three trustees, an appointee from the Dean of the Davis College, and a representative of the WVU Scholarship Program. The committee cannot exceed a total of nine members.
Management of the Scholarship
Scholarship guidelines are reviewed every three years by the selection committee, with revisions made when appropriate. The scholarship is managed by the Director of the Division of Animal and Nutritional Sciences in conjunction with the trustees of the fund.
Application Deadline
The deadline for applications is April 1 of each year. Applications must include letters of recommendation from two faculty members of the WVU Davis College. Selection of the scholarship recipients will be completed by May 15. By June 1, the committee will notify the recipients, and, if appropriate, the Financial Aid Office of WVU.
